Apparel is optional

Many of you have been asking if team suits are mandatory. The answer is no, it is an optional purchase if you would like the team suits. As a reminder if you did purchase a team suit do not put them in the washing machine, you speed up the wear and tear process. Just let it dry after every use.

Heat Winner Max Silva with Coach Ed

Max had one of the most memorable swims of the ISL championship, for me.  There is so much history leading up to that race, but on the 50yd free he lost his goggles on the start, was about a head behind the leaders, nailed his flip turn, and willed it home to take the heat.  A coach could not be prouder.  Congratulations Max on a great swim!  Oh, and did I mention he dropped 8 seconds!!!

SoPac Zone Jr. Olympic Qualification Tournament

What a great weekend of water polo for our team and Northwood Water Polo Club.  We ended up winning the Qualification tournament with a record of 4-0, beating Laguna Beach 12-2, SET 17-9, CHAWP 9-2, and United 8-6 in the finals.
2 things concerned me, first that we let set score 9 goals on us (even though we were in control the entire game), and allowing United to get back in the game in the 4th.
Versus SET I played the 2nd unit the majority of the 2nd half and really got upset with them about there effort and decision making.  We pride ourselves on being a great defensive team, allowing 9 goals is just way to many.
The other let up was in the finals vs United.  We got comfortable and stopped playing "Northwood" defense.  We were up 3 with 3 minutes left and they cut the lead to 1.  At that moment we went down to offense, drew a kick out and I called a time out...we executed the play to a T, and ended up winning by 2.  All in all I'm pleased with our improvement but there are many things we still need to improve to obtain our goal.

What is the difference between InterSession and a regular session?

InterSession is a 2 week camp, where the coaches are in the water and are running different stations for 20 minutes then they rotate. These classes are less swimming and more instruction with the coach demonstrating. InterSession occurs at the end or beginning of regular sessions.
Regular Session is an 8 week class with the coaches on the deck, giving swim drills, training, endurance, as well as stroke.

San Diego Cup 2013

I had a great weekend coaching my 12u Girls in the San Diego Cup. We decided as a club that we were going to enter all levels in an upper division, so my 12u's (6th graders)played in the 14u (8th Grade) division. We played awesome! Our team ended up going 4-1 in the tournament, beating SoCal, pacific, diablo, and del mar. We learned in 1 weekend what may have taken 6 months to learn. Not because I don't teach these skills but because we have never really had the opportunity to apply it against older, stronger, more physical opponents. We didn't only apply what we had practiced but we got better at it from the 1st to the last game. Guarding 2 meters has been a big emphasis of mine and if my memory serves me correct I don't think we allowed any team to score more than 6 goals (except the game we lost 9-5). The game of the weekend for me had to be the game vs Del Mar, we were down early 2-0, we were physically getting beat up including a head butt to Palmers face that forced the ref to call an injury timeout, and forced her to sit for half a quarter. We kept battling and started countering harder, making better decisions, and played our tempo. It came down to 16 seconds left in the game, we were up 7-6, Del Mar coach called a t/o so I knew they were going to run a drive from the 1, 2 side. My defensive line-up was Alyssa (goalie), Hannah C., Hannah P., Nicca, Amanda, Taylor, and a new girl that started playing a month ago, Malia. It was by far the biggest situation she had ever been in...trial by fire. I told the girls, IF they get beat on the drive, wing needs to pick up the driver. They ran a drive from 2 and Taylor who was playing x1 jumped into the lane and telegraphed the pass for the steal, protected the ball, passed it to the goalie and ran the clock out. Very gratifying. I see the trust forming, I see the accountability increasing, I see the fear dying, and the confidence building. Next up JO quals...we have improved every tournament. I like that trend.

Hectic Week APR 22 to APR 25...I hope

With the Woodbury Pool being down all private lessons will need to be postponed or at SCC. I guess the heater was faulty and it needs to be replaced asap. I cant imagine the pool being down for very long. The only down side is that the pool (SCC) is not available until 5:30pm which is the same time that the groups (that I moved) will be starting and the same time I coach my girls water polo team. That is why I have changed my polo teams practice this week to practice at SCC all week. Going to be a hectic week but I'm not worried about it. SCC is a state of the art facility and I already have a club swim team going there, so we are just going to consolidate the groups. Should be very competitive. I will also be there to monitor everything while I'm coaching my girls polo team. All worked out =)

Silverado Pool (until Lomas re-opens)

The Lomas pool is still down for repairs, http://www.portolasprings.org/community/updates.asp. As a temporary solution we have permission to use the Silverado Pool until Lomas is re-open. The address of the pool is 91 Scarlet Bloom (in Portola Springs). Class will remain from 3:30pm to 4:30pm Monday thru Thursday. I will keep you posted on when the Lomas Pool is available. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Heater is down at Woodbury

Looks like the pool at Woodbury is down. The heater was shut down on Thursday and we do not have a date yet for when the heater will be fixed. This means the pool will be VERY COLD.

As a temporary solution we will be changing workout to Rancho Santiago Community College located on Jamboree and Chapman Ave. Practice will begin at 5:30pm and will go til 6:30pm for all groups except Pipeline which will practice until 7pm.

As soon as the Woodbury Competition Pool is heated we will resume swim class at the normal time and location. I will keep you posted. Worst case scenario we will have to workout at Rancho Santiago for 2 weeks (the session ends May 2).

You will need a parking pass CLICK HERE FOR PARKING PERMIT or you will be ticketed.

The address of the pool is:

8045 E. Chapman Ave.
Orange, CA 92869

Please let me know if you have any questions.

2nd Place at CAL CUP 2013

We had a great weekend. In bracket play our 1st game was vs PAC, we won that game 13-6, beat Lamorinda 15-0, played 680 Drivers and lost that game 9-6. That put us 2nd in our bracket. That qualified us for the Semi-Final game vs Diablo Valley who was 1st in the other bracket. We beat them 7-4 and controlled the tempo of the game from the beginning. On the other side of the bracket Santa Barbara got 2nd place and they played 680 Drivers. So there was a chance that we would play 680 again, which I did not want. Not because of the earlier loss to them but because I wanted to play Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara ended up wining that game in a shootout. In the finals we ended up losing to Santa Barbara 12-8 in a game that I felt our flow was disrupted by a substitution that I had to make, which will help us in the future. I believe that improvement is more important than winning, this was a teachable moment that I had to take advantage of. Moving forward those are the teams to beat, along with United. I was really pleased with our big 3. Hannah C., Hannah P., and Nicca F., they played their hearts out and they are the bulk of our offense. But, more impressive were the role players who really stepped up throughout the tournament, I can see us gelling together as a unit. We still have a lot of work to due. Holding set, guarding set, pressure passing, transition defense, shooting, passing, spacing, and strategy. All in all it was a good weekend and I'm very proud and excited about this team. Our goal is to now win San Diego Cup and JO quals.

Private Lessons

My private lesson schedule will be very limited this summer. As some of you may know I coach water polo as well as swimming. I'm on the pool deck from 3:30pm to 5pm at Woodbury and from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Northwood (Monday thru Thursday). Also, I personally do not give "learn to swim" lessons, a swimmer must be proficient in all 4 strokes for a private lesson (with me). My lessons are geared towards competitive swimmers that are looking for a competitive edge.
I don't mean to sound so arrogant but with limited time, an impacted schedule, and a new born, I can not offer many privates this upcoming summer.
As for now, I have more than I can handle for private lessons, but will keep you all posted if anything changes.

We still have many available staff members that are experienced and knowledgeable to help give your swimmer that 1 on 1 attention. :)

Cal Cup Champs

April 12, 13, 14th Our Team will be playing at the Cal Cup Championships in Walnut Creek (by Oakland, CA). I'm a little concerned about everyone not being at practice last week and this week because of Spring Break. The focus on this week will be game situation and fundamentals of half court offense and transition defense. Our counter game is strong but we need everyone to understand that EVERYONE needs to counter, (not just when they have the ball). Also, everyone needs to play defense (not just when your player has the ball). I think we will do well but ultimately our focus and execution will determine how far we get in the tournament.

Twitter

What's Twitter Anyway?
Twitter is a FREE information network made up of 140-character messages called Tweets. It's a new and easy way to discover the latest news (“what’s happening”) related to subjects you care about - like Woodbury Aquatics.

How is it Useful?
Twitter contains information you will find valuable. Messages from our club and the club teams you choose to follow will show up on your twitter homepage for you to read and they can be sent to your phone via a mobile SMS/Text message or with a specialized app on your smartphone. You can receive club news as it’s happening, learn more about changes and information that are important to you, and get the inside scoop in real time. This includes last minute practice cancellation, meet locations, registration, competition results.

How to Start Using Twitter
If you remember one thing after perusing this page, it should be this: reading Tweets and receiving information from your Twitter timeline is where you’ll find the most value on Twitter and you do NOT need a fancy "smart" phone to use it. Some people find it useful to contribute their own Tweets but it is entirely optional and the real magic of Twitter lies in getting real-time information that matters to you. Below is a step-by-step on our recommended process for signing up and using twitter.

Sign Up on Twitter
First, you will need to Create an Account with Twitter. You can use THIS LINK to do so and then come back to this page for the next steps. The process is pretty self explanatory, but if you'd like to see a step by step instructions from Twitter with pictures on how to create the account, click here.

Add Your Mobile Phone to Your Account
The most powerful use of Twitter with Woodbury Aquatics is in getting information immediately while on the go - and what better way than to receive it on your mobile phone. The simplest way is to use SMS, which requires text messaging capability on your mobile phone. Each "tweet" you receive will come as a text message on your phone (Twitter is free, however SMS charges may apply according to your service plan).
To begin, text the word START to 40404 (we recommend adding Twitter to your phone book with 40404 as the mobile number)
Wait for Twitter to reply and ask you to sign up if you're new or reply with your username if you already have an account, which you do.
Send your username - the same one you used when you created and account in step 1 (do not send any additional characters in the message, or they won't be able to read it correctly)
When Twitter asks for your password, carefully send your password to them (remember: passwords are case sensitive!)
Twitter will ask you to send "OK" if you want to use Twitter on your phone. Send OK, and you're all set to begin following!
Sometimes there are little hiccups in this process. If you do not receive any replies from Twitter, we recommend you try Twitter's instructions on How to Add Your Phone via Web Activation.

If you own a smartphone and would like to receive Twitter info via an app on your phone instead of a text - there are many various Twitter apps available for Blackberry, iPhone and Android based phones. Just visit your phone's app store and search using the keyword "Twitter" to find one.

For more information or support visit Twitter's Mobile Help Center which has very good info on just about everything.

Follow the Club Twitter Feeds
Once you have your mobile phone added to your account and working you are ready to follow the club tweets and be connected!

From your mobile phone, text the word FOLLOW and then the TWITTER FEED NAME of the club twitter feed (selected from the list below) to Twitter at 40404. Since following the club's main information feed is very important, we'll use that as an example.

To follow the club's main feed text FOLLOW Woodburyaquatic to 40404. If you've done it correctly, you will receive back a confirmation from twitter as well as the last "tweet" or message sent out from the group.
